Working Together

Overview

Working Together provides a range of services to parents and carers designed to help them examine and develop the relationships within their family. Our aim is not to tell people how to be good parents but provide them with the opportunity to explore the options, support and advice open to them and choose to make changes they feel right.

Many parents come across a time when they find one or more aspects of their child’s behaviour difficult to understand or deal with. They may be getting into trouble with the law or refusing to attend school. It is at times like these when parents can feel cut off from their children and as if they are working through problems on their own. The Working Together team is familiar with the needs of parents during these periods and not only uses a team of skilled workers to provide support, but encourages parents to talk with other parents and share their experiences; talking to other parents can offer new ideas for coping with children and sharing thoughts can help clear things up.

The Programme

An eight-session programme designed for parents of young people who are truanting from school or offending. Parents attend the programme either on a voluntary basis or through a parenting order. The programme covers the following topics: A parent's job, how young people feel, family life, communication, drugs health & the law, changes in family life, reducing truancy/anti-social behaviour and what the next steps need be. Parents can be seen in groups or on an individual basis.

Family Mediation

Helping families develop their skills to listen to each other, understand each other’s point of view and make compromises to improve relationships. Our role is to mediate between family members and maintain a no blame outlook within the sessions.

Workshops

A range of learning based workshops, each with an individual theme including: helping with homework, setting home times, drug awareness and understanding conflict. Parents can attend one or all workshops depending on their needs.

Referrals

We have links with many agencies across Birmingham and take referrals from Youth Offending Teams and Education Welfare Services.
